We don’t do the obvious. We do what works.

The obvious interior is the one you have already seen: the palette of the season, the material everyone specifies, the room that photographs well and wears badly. It is safe, and it is forgettable.

Material and colour are the protagonists here. We experiment with them continuously and we test them before we specify them, because an interior is judged after two years of use, not on the day of the photoshoot. The details decide: joints, thresholds, the way light meets a surface.

arcHITects is an Italian interior design studio in Milan, founded in 2009. We are tailors of space: no templates, every project cut to the client, the site and the story. You have the last word.

02 — what we design

Four kinds of interior

Private and commercial interiors, in Milan and across Italy, for Italian and international clients.

Private homes

Apartments and villas where the interior is the project. Layout, light, materials, custom furniture, and the coordination of the makers who build it.

Short rent and rental

Interiors designed for turnover: surfaces that survive cleaning, layouts that sleep more guests, and rooms that photograph well because they are well lit, not because they are staged.

Offices and workspaces

iWorkHere was selected for Best Italian Interior Design 2018 at Triennale. Acoustics, light and circulation decided before the furniture catalogue.

Retail and hospitality

Shops, bars and restaurants where the interior has to work a fifteen hour day and still look new after two years.

03 — how we work

From the first measurement to the last switch

Brief and survey. We measure the space and listen to how you actually live or trade in it. The brief comes out of that, not out of a style questionnaire.

Concept and materials. Layout, light and a material palette you can touch. Samples, not renders only.

Technical drawings. Custom furniture, lighting plan and installation drawings, so the makers build what was designed.

Makers and supervision. We work with Italian artisans and suppliers and follow the installation on site.

04 — why Milan

What being in Milan actually gives you

The supply chain. Furniture, lighting, stone, glass, joinery and textile makers are within an hour of the studio, and we visit them. Writing a specification from a catalogue means guessing. We go to the workshop first, and then we write it.

The calendar. Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone put every new material within walking distance once a year, and the studio has exhibited and been published around them since 2013.

The trades. Italian installers and joiners are used to tolerances that would be considered fussy elsewhere. It shows in the joints, which is where interiors are actually judged.

For clients abroad this means one thing: you are not managing five suppliers from another country. We are.

Survey & brief

Measurements, constraints and a written scope with a budget range.

Concept & materials

Layout, light, palette and samples. Revisions until it is right.

Build & install

Drawings for the makers, and supervision until the last switch.

06 — interiors we delivered

Rooms that have been lived in for years

The Italian House in Brera, where the colour does the structural work. Collector’s House in Milan, where the dressing room is a room and not a corridor. An attic rebuilt around the geometry of its own roof. Collegno 7 in Dergano, where the staircase everybody passes through was worth designing.

questions we get

Before you write to us

Do you work with clients who live abroad?

Regularly. Meetings are online, samples are couriered, and the installation is supervised by us. Most international clients visit once or twice.

Do you design the furniture as well?

Yes, when the space asks for it. Custom joinery is drawn in the studio and built by Italian makers we have worked with for years.

Can you do interiors only, without the building work?

Yes. Many projects are interiors on an existing shell. If the work touches systems or layout we handle the filings too.

How do I know the interior will be mine, and not your style?

Because we design against your brief, not our portfolio. We bring options and real samples, we explain how each one behaves after a few years of use, and you choose.

How long does it take?

A private apartment usually runs months from brief to installation. You get a calendar with the brief.

Do you work outside Milan?

Yes. We work as interior designers across Italy: Lombardy and the lakes regularly, the rest of the country and abroad when the project justifies the travel.
